What is there to see? Is Spiez Castle worth visiting? How to get there? Is Spiez castle free? What is there to see inside? What other things are there to do near Interlaken? Let's get into it.

Is Spiez Castle worth visiting?

Absolutely. Spiez Castle (Schloss Spiez) on the shores of Lake Thun is one of Switzerland’s most picturesque and historically significant landmarks. Dating back more than 1,000 years, the castle combines medieval architecture, a Romanesque church, and sweeping views of the Bernese Alps. Although the views alone are simply breathtaking, the castle is far more than just a photo stop.

Inside, visitors can explore curated exhibitions, period-furnished rooms, and family-friendly activities that bring the region’s history to life. After the museum tour, you can stop for a scenic lunch at the castle's cafe. The central location near Interlaken also makes Spiez Castle an easy and worthwhile addition to any Swiss itinerary.

Personally for me, the Spiez Castle exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere of the small town, the views over the lake framed by the alps and the endless vineyards, the well preserved medieval structures... Spiez is a place to remember!

A Brief Look into Spiez Castle History

The Spiez Castle history dates back over 1,000 years, with its origins rooted in the early medieval period. It was first mentioned in historical records around 933 AD and served as the residence of the Freiherr von Strättligen family. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, evolving architecturally with Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque additions.

Notable historical highlights:

  • Medieval tower built around the year 1200

  • 13th-century Romanesque church, still used today

  • Ownership by the influential von Erlach family for nearly 400 years

  • Transition from fortress to noble residence during the Renaissance

Today, Spiez Castle Switzerland stands as a well-preserved symbol of feudal power, culture, and heritage in the Bernese Oberland region.

Is the Spiez Castle Free?

You can access the grounds for free and view the castle from outside for free. This is what I did since we were on a tight schedule, but it was absolutely worth the stop. Roaming the grounds is like stepping into a medieval tale! Pop inside the castle bistro to catch a glimpse of the interiors.

The inside of the castle has been turned into a museum and you will have to purchase a ticket. Prices vary depending on possible discounts for students and children. Tickets typically include access to the museum rooms, exhibitions, and the historic tower, giving you the full Spiez Castle experience. Be sure to check the official website for up-to-date prices, opening hours, and any special events before your visit.

The town gets more lively during the summer months and the weather peaks during July - August (around 77.4°F). If you prefer to visit when it's cooler and calmer, head to Spiez early or late in the season.

I opted for the very last days of the season and we got to experience the castle almost alone while the vineyards were showing of their fall colors - absolutely stunning!

How Long to Spend in Spiez?

Most visitors find that half a day to a full day in Spiez is ideal. While the castle is the main attraction, the town itself offers plenty to explore. In my opinion, you'll get the best views of the castle right outside the train station when you start descending to the lake. The station is higher up and gives you gorgeous panoramic views of the castle!
