What Makes Eze Village Worth Visiting?
Exploring the French Riviera's Hilltop Charm Eze Village was one of my absolute favourites on our trip to the South of France. It’s one of the most photographed villages in the region, and for good reason.
However, while Eze offers plenty to explore, it also comes with its own set of challenges that you should be aware of before your visit.
If you plan carefully, I promise it will be worth it!
Here’s a practical guide to help you make the most of your trip to Eze:
What Is Eze Village Famous For?
A Unique Combination of Views, Architecture, and Atmosphere
Èze is built like a labyrinth spiraling upward. Each turn reveals a new courtyard, a handcrafted boutique, or a hidden alley framed by bougainvillea. The compact size makes it easy to explore on foot, though the pathways are steep. As you climb toward the summit, the Mediterranean opens up beneath you in vivid shades of blue.
The village is beautiful throughout the year, but its popularity means it can get crowded, especially during the summer. Understanding how to navigate those peak times can make your visit much more enjoyable.
Despite its allure, Eze is a working village that attracts a fair number of tourists, so while it's undeniably charming, it may not be as peaceful as one might expect from a hilltop escape.
One of the major draws of Eze is the breathtaking view. From the top of the village, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Mediterranean, with the coast stretching out to Monaco and Nice. The weather is almost always pleasant, but like much of the French Riviera, the summer months can get very hot and crowded.
Things to Do in Eze Village
1. Wander the Old Town (Vieux Eze)
Exploring the Old Town of Eze is a top priority for most visitors. The narrow, winding streets are lined with boutiques, cafés, and artisan shops selling everything from jewelry to local artwork. While it’s beautiful, it can get crowded.
My recommendation would be to visit just before or right after the worst tourist season. Otherwise the streets can get quite packed, and the shops cater to tourists, which means prices tend to be on the higher side.
Also take into account that the Village sits on top of a mountain top. While the bus takes you to the Village, the old town is still a short climb uphill. It's worth visiting, but you can definitely get more out of your experience by planning your visit carefully.
The Old Town is the heart of Èze. Its network of cobbled streets is small but intricate, creating an almost storybook atmosphere. You’ll find:
Artisan boutiques
Small cafés
Local craft and jewelry shops
Galleries and studios
2. Relax in the Exotic Garden of Eze (Jardin Exotique d'Eze)
The Jardin Exotique is the crown of the village. This is where you'll also find the best views Eze has to offer. Sitting at the very top, it provides panoramic views over:
Cap-Ferrat
Èze-sur-Mer
The coastline stretching toward Monaco
Remote hills and cliffs
The garden itself is filled with succulents, cacti, Mediterranean shrubs, and carefully arranged pathways. Sculptures placed between the plants add to the atmosphere, while the terraces overlook some of the most dramatic scenery in the region.
Why It’s Worth the Climb
Even travelers who aren’t plant enthusiasts find the garden unforgettable. The views alone justify the visit, but the setting on the ruins of an ancient fortress adds a powerful sense of place.
And once more I have to state the obvious. The Exotic Garden is perhaps the most iconic spot in Eze. Although the steep climb to the very top of the Village can be daunting, it's well worth the effort.

3. Tour the Fragonard Perfume Factory
Èze has a long connection to perfumery, and the Fragonard Perfume Factory offers free guided tours explaining how fragrances are crafted. Visitors learn about extraction techniques, ingredients, and the history behind one of France’s most famous perfume houses.
While the tour is interesting, it also leads directly into a boutique where staff present their collections. The pressure to buy isn’t overwhelming, but the sales pitch is noticeable. Still, it’s a worthwhile stop if you enjoy the world of fragrance.
The Perfume Factory is right beside the bus stop, before you start climbing up to the old town. Perfect for those who still want to visit but skip the climb to the very top!
4. Hike the Nietzsche Path / Trail
For those looking to add a bit of adventure to their visit, the Nietzsche Path is a popular hiking trail that takes you from Eze-sur-Mer (coastal area with train stop) to the old village of Eze.
The trail is steep, rocky, and can be physically demanding, so it’s not for everyone. However, if you enjoy a good hike, the views along the way are spectacular.
Do keep in mind that it’s a tough climb, especially in the summer heat, so come prepared with plenty of water and sturdy footwear.
What to Expect
The trail is steep and exposed
It takes from 1 to 1.5 hours uphill, depending on pace
The rocky terrain requires sturdy shoes
Summer heat makes the climb more challenging
The reward is a remarkable combination of sea views, cliffs, and vegetation. If you enjoy hiking, this trail offers one of the most memorable approaches to the village.
Best Direction
Most visitors hike uphill from Èze-sur-Mer, but hiking downhill is easier and still scenic. The path is well marked in both directions.
5. Visit the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption
The Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption sits near the top of the village and offers a quiet place to pause. Its ochre facade stands out beautifully against the stone surroundings, and the interior features a simple Baroque style.
While not a large attraction, the church adds cultural depth to your visit and offers views across the surrounding cliffs and rooftops.
Best Time to Visit Eze Village
Eze Village enjoys a Mediterranean climate, making it a year-round destination.
However, the best times to visit are in the spring (April to early June) and fall (September to October), when the weather is mild, and the crowds are fewer.
Summer months (July and August) are busier, and you may find the village more crowded, especially during peak tourist season. This time of year during peak hours you might not be able to fit into the bus you want.
How to Get to Eze Village
Eze is conveniently located on the French Riviera, making it easy to visit from popular nearby destinations like Nice, Monaco, and Cannes. The village is accessible by car, bus, or even by train. The train station at Eze-sur-Mer is located at the foot of the hill, and from there, you can either take a bus or hike up the scenic Nietzsche Path.
- By Car: Eze Village is about 12 km from Nice and 10 km from Monaco. It’s a short, scenic drive along the coast. Note that parking is limited!
- By Train & Hiking: Eze-sur-Mer station is on the Nice-Monaco train line. From the station, it’s a proper hike up to Eze Village.
- By Bus: Buses run regularly between Nice and Eze Village, also stopping at the smaller coastal towns on the way. Take into account that during peak season busses get crowded too and you might not be able to always hop on! I recommend either traveling outside the worst tourist season or heading there as early as possible.
Tips for Visiting Èze Village Comfortably
Wear Comfortable Shoes
The steep stone lanes require good traction. Lightweight sneakers or hiking sandals work best.
Bring Water
Facilities are limited inside the Old Town. Staying hydrated is especially important in warm months.
Plan for Crowds (!!)
Peak-season afternoons are extremely busy. Early morning visits offer a more tranquil experience. Note that during peak season during the most popular hours you might not fit onboard the bus you want to take.
Explore Beyond Main Alleys
Small side passages often lead to quieter viewpoints and beautiful corners away from the main tourist flow.
Pair Your Visit With Nearby Destinations
Èze is perfectly combined with:
Cap-Ferrat
Villefranche-sur-Mer
Monaco
Nice Old Town
This makes it ideal for a half-day or full-day excursion.
Èze Village is undoubtably one of the French Riviera’s most captivating - and popular - locations. And for good reasons!
Experiencing Eze turned out to be the highlight of my trip. But I can only imagine the hassle with crowds during peak season. So make sure to plan carefully to make sure you'll get the best possible experience.
Arriving early, wearing comfortable shoes, and understanding the layout of the village will help you enjoy its charm to the fullest. Once you reach the top and look out across the deep blue coastline, all the preparation feels justified.
Èze rewards every minute spent exploring its heights.
